Hello Carl, i work as a psychic medium & left a very well paid job to follow my calling. Gone are the days when people would go to a healer or mystic & leave offerings in exchange for their service. We live in a material world now & if i did every thing for free how would i pay my mortgage,bills, buy food or run a car which enables me to travel & teach others. All gifts come from the Divine so what about singers,songwriters,artists,actors, etc: etc: As long as the messenger does not become more important that the message & you work to be of benifit to others i do not see a problem in charging for my service. I agree with Steve, I think it all boils down to survival. If I was wealthy and working in another profession eg, when Gordon Smith was a barber I would not charge for my readings, but being that I am the sole earner and have to afford my rent, bills etc, I have to charge. I have given myself up to spirit and funnily they always make sure that I have exactly what I need each month, no more,no less. Mind you I know of a psychic artist who is juggling two jobs, he is giving 50/50 to each job, then he wonders why he is not making a huge name for himself. So its a bit of a no win situation. So to the orginal author, yes if you can afford not to charge, then yes do not charge, if you have to work to survive financially, then thats the way it must be.

Good point and one which Im sure will produce an interesting discussion ! I run the Open Arms Spiritual Haven in Grays, and our principle has always been that we are non-profit making. We donate all profits we raise from our evenings to two Grays charities, and all of the card readers, therapists, healers etc who come every week and have a table at the centre do so completely fre of charge. They work only for donations, which means that our visitors are able to get a tarot reading, or a reiki taster, for a handful of change. The average donation is 1-2.00.
The upside of this is that they often get requests to work privately, outside of the Haven. Therefore they are giving their services freely to the community for Spirit on a Sunday evening, but picking up the odd bit of paid work as a "reward". I dont have a problem with this.
All the mediums who work platform for us do so purely for petrol money. I have been asked on a couple of occasions for a "fee" to book mediums, which I have politely declined - its not what we are about.
On a personal level, as a medium I never charge for my services. I have never charged for a reading, a house clearance, or any of the other services I provide - not even petrol money. When people have been insistent, I ask them to donate to the Haven. That said, Im blessed with a profitable paying job, so can afford to work with Spirit in my free time for nothing.
I know mediums who charge, and to be frank, I feel as long as it is not extortionate, and the mediumship is of top quality, its OK to charge a nominal fee. Note the word NOMINAL. Nothing sickens me more than charging through the nose for readngs. I get particularly annoyed by the companies who are springing up offering mediums on the phones, or on cable tv. I checked one of those channels out recently - they should be shot ! That is the type of service which I feel exploits people - the "mediums" concerned clearly were about as psychic as my geraniums, and the "messages" they were giving were so facile as to be laughable.
I think then, in summary, its OK to charge a REASONABLE amount of money as long as you put plenty in too. As one of the other posters mentioned, there are still bills to pay, and I feel that its acceptable as long as you work for charity and for the greater good too ! Sorry this is wordy, but I felt there was a lot of angles I wanted to cover ! Jay xxx

Hi all For platform work at distance i charge for my petrol if its local i do it for free, for rescue work i do it for free...for Private readings i charge but the normal rate not some silly rate...I do a lot of work for charity..
A lot of money goes on expenses..I feel mediums should charge for readings especially if they give a lot of there time for free it helps with there expenses and to live......xxx

I totally agree with Jay here, Ive just started to attend the Open Arms Spiritual Havan in Grays and there are services available as mentioned, the healers and card readers in this Havan only take donations and thats how it should be but again the price of living is expensive and so a small charge is not much to ask for compared to the priceless messages that mediums like us provide to ease the minds of people who wish to be in contact to there loved one.

An interesting mix of opinions. I think that it depends on the circumstances of the indvidual medium. Some of us are in the good situation to have other income and can therefore charge a nominal amount, whereas others do this as a full time occupation and therefore need to charge.
Whilst we live in and have to abide by the rules of this existence, I see no reason to feel guilty about charging. After all, does not everyone use some of their talents in their job and therefore get paid for it.
As an aside, there is a perception among some people, that something given for free is not as valuable as something you have to pay for. What do you think to that?

Hi,
I am a medium & psychic artist, and all I ask for after the reading is a hand shake or a hug! I never charge for anything. As many others have done I agonised over this for a long time but I did not feel comfortable charging people so I don't, even when it takes me hours to paint my spirits story! I find I feel so for filled from what I do it is payment enough. I work by word of mouth, if someone comes to me I help them, I don't tout for work... many mediums that advertise will charge, and sometime massive amounts for there services, but that has to be on there conscience. I don't believe that you make a living from being a medium, I believe you integrate yourself into every day life and help as and when the need arises.
Just the way I feel no disrespect intended to anyone.

Nicola, Do people come to you? Do you go to them at a distance? would you charge petrol if you traveled a distance? If i could afford not to charge i would but alas i do need as i couldnt afford the up keep of a car or petrol..

Hello Carl. I do understand what you are saying, and have to say, that when I first started out I did not want to charge for the readings because I too did not think that it was right, especially as it is a gift from God. But you know, it is right that if you do not charge people do not want a reading from you because they think that you are no good or that you don't rate yourself a good medium, so they go to where a medium charges, and the higher the charge the more readings the mediums get, and that is the truth. I don't know why this is, but I guess it is the way people think. The believe that the medium that charges a high fee must therefore be a very good medium. I know of a number of really good mediums who donate their time for free, give good evidence of life in the spirit world yet get very few people to their door. I have to say that I do charge a minimal fee, but only work in a small way, as and when needed. I have served churches but have not taken money for the service, but often I am made to take petrol money, only fare they say, and so I accept. I have done charity work, and healing. But never take money for the Healing, and will not take petrol money either. I have nothing against charging for readings, I know many who have given up their day jobs, or who have retired from work, to donate their time to spirit and those who need readings, they still have to pay their bills, eat, and clothe themselves, as well as run a car, or pay fares on transport. So why should they not charge a nominal fee for their services. I am sure that spirit will agree, and as long as mediums are true to their calling and work in truth, love and light, God will not mind either, as long as they don't use their gift for selfish gains.

I agree Doreen, I was also thinking if spirit wasn't happy that mediums charge why hasn't the gift been taken..God giveth god taketh away and why do spirit choose there mediums..?
Also its a gift but also a curse in some cases as there things we see and dont want to see but can not change...
