Wendy, I don't know who your expert is but... I suggest to read manly P. Halls books. He truly was a leading expert in comparitive mythology and religion as well as an occult philosopher. Aphrodite is connected with Venus. Aphrodite and Adonis changed into fish to escape the Titan. (They both represent the constellation of picses.
You need to have a good understanding of mythology in order to see the connection. When something has been placed the wrong way round.., it is known under the term: Occult blinds. These occult blinds were integrated into religious buildings to preserve the teachings of the mystery schools.
I don't think I can help you any further without having seen the church myself and all the other connecting symbolism.

The church window shows Qabalah - tree of life (the history can be found on wikipedia). The three pillars are represented. Flames above the left and the right hand one. The crown (including the six rayed star) is above the middle pillar. The four angels are most likely Raphael, Michael, Gabriel and Uriel.
The origin of the church is from what I understand an off shoot of some kind of Freemasonry/occult group).
You'll find similar symbolsim in for example Rosslyn Chapel.
Here below is one of its windows. Note that Jesus in the position of the Sun.
I think that Cascara already commented on it. Astrology and Qabalah is the key to understanding the art. The knowledge was concealed and preserved this way as in those days you were playing with your live if it was known that you are a Freemason etc. (Rosslyn was build in the 15th century, a time when Catholicism was state religion. The Freemason preserved the 'pagan' knowledge by integrating it with Christian symbolism ).

I've had a closer look at that window. It shows the astrological sign of pisces. You find Adonis on the Left and Aphrodite on the Right. (The Myth is that they changed into fish to escape the Titan). The fish are head down looking towards the water. This is in line with the Myth of Adonis who admired his own reflection and therefore came into materialisation on the physical plane. Also the two flames of the pillars of Severity and Mercy are shown. The six rayed star.

Thank you for the opportunity to give an isight into the occult art. It makes visiting cathedrals and churches more interesting when having to solve a puzzle lol!

Hi Wendy,

I googled the location and use the street maps to zoom in.
The Eagle and man are indeed reversed. The meaning for them not to sit in their direction symbolises the 11th path of the Qabalah. The words engraved are all to do with Love. I quess that the church has been build on a date that Jupiter was in the sky. The angel is probably pointing in the direction where Jupiter was when they laid the first stone. Jupiter's orbit around the Sun is 12 'earth' years.
In the Qabalah, Jupiter is associated with the 11th Path. 11th path is also the element Air and associated with Love.

The bronze figures at the top are sitting in the quarters they cover. It is the windows that are of importance and face the main directions.

Hello Wendy,

I have solved your first mystery!
Did a google to find more pictures of the church. The entrance shows the lion and the Bull sitting on either side of the door. This symbolises (like Cascara already explained) the entrance into the realm of God (or the Underworld).
Lion (south) is sitting next to Bull (north).
The other opposites are East and West or in other words: the Man and Eagle.
These are also placed opposite of each other. If you look at the Eagle. It's head is facing East and the Man is looking towards the West.

Where is this church? Would like to work out this puzzle, lol!
To clearly understand the positioning of the figurines, draw a circle on a piece of paper while standing in the middle of the church. Than position the figurines you see inside the church on the inside of the circle and place the figurines that you see outside the church on the outside of the drawn circle. Also position where the entrance of the church is on the outside of the circle.
If you have a scanner, scan your findings and we all can have a look and try to figure it out. That some of the figures are placed half way like NW, ES, makes sense to me. Divide your circle by placing a cross in the middle and you see that the figure are placed in the quarters that they 'cover'.

Everything has at least seven levels of understanding.
What you find inside the church is probably 'reversed' as you are symbolically residing in the realm of 'God'.
Remember 'As above, so below'.
